Hello! I’m Lori Underwood

Welcome to My Site

Welcome and thanks for visiting my site! I invite you to take a moment and look around.I hope that there is something useful here that will help you out on your path.  I have shared a quote by Kassandra Vaughn (kassandravaughn.com)

You are the ruler of your life, the master of your fate and, far too often, we allow the circumstances of life to dictate the choices we make.  We settle.  We play small.  We tolerate things we should not be tolerating and then wonder why we're unhappy.

About

Throughout my life, I have had challenges that felt like they were impossible to overcome, at least to my sanity. But in 2019, I decided to go back to school and complete my Master of Education in Adult Education. It has been a journey!  I was not initially drawn to education because I was tainted from watching all my older siblings, my mother, and my favourite aunt all at different levels of the educational system. It was high school teaching that had the biggest impact - my mother was the high school teacher. That looked dreadful to me. Having all these children, most of whom were not interested, learn.  But when I saw that there was a degree in adult education, I was excited. I had been teaching and coaching adults most of my adult life and this was the perfect step for me to take. However, I was so removed from formal schooling that the start of the program was terrifying. I thought that I was fooling myself when I met my cohort. I thought to myself, they are all actively teaching on a daily basis - why am I here?

This program created a passion and drive that have paved the way to new opportunities to seek out, unique experiences and exceptional relationships both personally and professionally.

I am excited to share with you. Come back from time to time to see the changes as I grow and change.

Master of Education in Adult Education

September 2019 to July 2021

Attending Yorkville University online to do my first official degree was a challenge. But not as much of a challenge as getting to a classroom would have been.
I start my Capstone on May 3, 2021 and I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am to complete this degree. I have waited my entire adult life to go back to school. My children came first and as soon as they were all settled in school or work, I was able to give myself the time to do my degree.

Vanier College and Douglas College

long ago

I did complete two full programs in the community social worker program. They were years apart and the second time while attending Douglas college I also audited courses in the same subjects at Yorkville University. There were a few reasons why I audited at the university level and attended at the college level. First, I convinced myself that I did not have what it took to go straight to university. Second, my older brother was the president of Yorkville University at the time so I could audit and learn.
